'Sigma' Review: Sundeep Kishan Tries Hard, the Script Doesn't

Scale, slick visuals and a committed Sundeep Kishan can't rescue Jason Sanjay's debut from a thin script and shaky direction. Rating: 2/5.

Cine Sarkar Editorial Desk | Our perspective is informed by publicly available reviews, audience reactions, and information surrounding the film.

‘Sigma’, starring Sundeep Kishan and Faria Abdullah, released on October 2 in Telugu and Tamil. Produced by Lyca Productions, the action comedy thriller marks the directorial debut of Jason Sanjay, with music by Thaman.

The setup

Guru (Sundeep Kishan) runs a library and is drowning in debt. An antique key and a rigged gambling den pull him into a risky plan that tangles him up with a dangerous criminal network. Whether the plan pays off is the film’s story.

Performances

Sundeep Kishan commits completely, and his sincerity shows in every scene. Sampath Raj brings credibility to the antagonist. Faria Abdullah, however, is given a forgettable role with little impact.

Direction and screenplay

The idea isn’t new, and the screenplay is thin from the start. The first half drags, the second half circles without much logic, and forced comedy keeps undercutting the tone, all the way to a weak climax. The debutant director’s passion is visible; command over the story isn’t.

Technical aspects

Krishnan Vasant’s cinematography and colour grading give the film a polished, stylish look. Thaman’s background score is often loud and overbearing, and some obvious green-screen work cheapens the production.

What works

  • Sundeep Kishan’s commitment
  • Sampath Raj as the villain
  • Stylish visuals and a sense of scale

What doesn’t

  • A thin, unoriginal story
  • A slow first half and a repetitive second half
  • Forced comedy and an overbearing score
  • A weak climax, and a wasted heroine

Cine Sarkar’s take

‘Sigma’ has scale, a hard-working lead and good-looking visuals, but without solid writing and steady direction to hold them together, it falls flat. Weighing those strengths against those weaknesses, the Cine Sarkar Editorial Desk rates it 2/5. Sundeep Kishan’s fans and viewers after undemanding action may find it a passable one-time watch.

Cine Sarkar verdict: Sundeep Kishan gives it his all, but thin writing and shaky direction leave Sigma stranded.
