'Comrade Kalyan' Review: Sree Vishnu Keeps It Fun Until the Forest Takes Over

Sree Vishnu's timing and his scenes with Satya make the first half an easy laugh, and despite a serious second half and a weak climax, 'Comrade Kalyan' is a decent one-time entertainer. Rating: 3/5.

Cine Sarkar Editorial Desk | Our perspective is informed by publicly available reviews, audience reactions, and information surrounding the film.

‘Comrade Kalyan’, starring Sree Vishnu and Mahima Nambiar, released in theatres on October 9. The comedy entertainer is directed by Janakiram Marella and produced by Venkata Krishna Karnati, with music by Vijay Bulganin.

The setup

Madugula, 1992. Kalyan (Sree Vishnu) runs the village theatre and worships R. Narayana Murthy. He falls for Sitara (Mahima Nambiar), an Odia girl, and a reckless attempt to help her lands him, quite by accident, inside a Naxalite squad. How this unlikely ‘comrade’ gets out alive is the story.

Performances

Sree Vishnu carries the film on his comic timing, lifting even the weaker scenes with his delivery. Satya is a riot as Dubai Balu, and the stretches the two share are the film’s biggest strength. Mahima Nambiar is fine within a limited role. Radhika Sarathkumar as the hero’s mother, Shine Tom Chacko as a police officer and Upendra Limaye do what is asked of them.

Direction and screenplay

Treating a Naxal backdrop as entertainment rather than drama is a neat idea. But the opening is slow and the character introductions don’t land. Once the story finds its feet, the first half moves along breezily. After the interval the film shifts into the forest and turns serious, the laughs thin out and the pace dips. The climax leans on messaging and ends up unconvincing.

Technical aspects

The cinematography is pleasing and captures the ’90s setting well. Vijay Bulganin’s songs and background score are adequate but not memorable. The editing is mostly solid, though the second half could have been tighter, and there are some dubbing issues early on.

What works

  • Sree Vishnu’s comic timing
  • The Sree Vishnu and Satya combination
  • A breezy first half
  • The idea of playing a Naxal backdrop for laughs

What doesn’t

  • A slow start
  • A second half that turns serious and loses pace
  • An unconvincing, message-heavy climax
  • Forgettable music

Cine Sarkar’s take

‘Comrade Kalyan’ sets out to make you laugh, and for a good part of the first half it does. Whenever Sree Vishnu and Satya are on screen the film is lively. It can’t hold that energy through the second half and the ending is weak, but on the whole the laughs outweigh the lapses. Weighing those strengths against those weaknesses, the Cine Sarkar Editorial Desk rates it 3/5. Fans of Sree Vishnu’s brand of comedy and viewers after light entertainment can give it a one-time watch.

Cine Sarkar verdict: The second half wobbles, but Sree Vishnu and Satya deliver enough laughs to make Comrade Kalyan a decent one-time watch.
