కథ ఏంటంటే:
కొరియా సరిహద్దుకు దగ్గర్లోని ఒక చిన్న పట్టణంలో ముక్కలైన ఒక ఎద్దు కళేబరం కనిపించడంతో కథ మొదలవుతుంది. ఏదో వింత జీవి ఊరిని అతలాకుతలం చేస్తుంటుంది. పోలీస్ చీఫ్ బమ్-సియోక్ (హ్వాంగ్ జంగ్-మిన్), కొత్త ఆఫీసర్ సంగ్-ఏ (జంగ్ హో-యోన్) దాని కోసం వెతుకుతారు. మరోవైపు వేటగాడు సంగ్-కి (జో ఇన్-సంగ్) బృందం ఆ జీవిని వేటాడేందుకు అడవిలోకి వెళ్లి, తామే వేటగా మారతారు. ఆ దాడి వెనుక ఒక్క జీవి కాదు, ఇంకా పెద్ద ముప్పు ఉందని తెలిశాక కథ మలుపు తిరుగుతుంది.
నటీనటులు:
భయం, ఆవేశం, కరుణ కలగలిసిన పోలీస్ చీఫ్‌గా హ్వాంగ్ జంగ్-మిన్ నటన సినిమాకు అతిపెద్ద బలం. జంగ్ హో-యోన్ ఎనర్జీ, కామెడీ టైమింగ్ ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి. జో ఇన్-సంగ్ పాత్ర మాత్రం అప్పుడప్పుడు కార్టూన్‌లా అనిపిస్తుంది. విదేశీ నటులతో కూడిన ఉపకథ చాలా ఆలస్యంగా రావడంతో వారి పాత్రలకు లోతు దక్కలేదు.
దర్శకత్వం, కథనం:
మొదటి గంటలో జీవిని పెద్దగా చూపించకుండానే దర్శకుడు అద్భుతమైన ఉత్కంఠ సృష్టించారు. అపరిచితమైనదాని పట్ల భయం, పక్షపాతం వంటి అంశాలను కథలో అల్లిన తీరు బాగుంది. కానీ కథ అడవికి చేరాక సుదీర్ఘమైన ఛేజ్‌లు, పునరావృతమయ్యే ఘర్షణలతో ఉత్కంఠ పలచబడుతుంది. హారర్ నుంచి కామెడీకి ఒక్కసారిగా మారే టోన్ కూడా కొన్నిచోట్ల ఇబ్బంది పెడుతుంది. దాదాపు రెండున్నర గంటలకు పైగా ఉన్న నిడివి ఓపికను పరీక్షిస్తుంది, ముగింపు సీక్వెల్ కోసం వేసిన పునాదిలా అనిపిస్తుంది.

‘Hope’, the sci-fi creature feature from ‘The Wailing’ director Na Hong-jin, his first film in nearly a decade, released in theatres here on October 23, including in Telugu. Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung and Jung Ho-yeon lead the cast, with Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Taylor Russell in key roles.
The setup
It begins with a mutilated bull in a sleepy town near the Korean border. Something is tearing the place apart. Police chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) and rookie officer Sung-ae (Jung Ho-yeon) go looking for it, while hunter Sung-ki (Zo In-sung) and his crew head into the forest to track the beast and soon find themselves the hunted. The discovery that there is more than one infiltrator changes everything.
Performances
Hwang Jung-min is the film’s backbone, mixing bluster, fear and compassion as the police chief. Jung Ho-yeon brings energy and sharp comic timing. Zo In-sung’s hunter sometimes tips into caricature, and the subplot involving the foreign cast arrives too late to give their characters much depth.
Direction and screenplay
For its first hour Na Hong-jin builds superb suspense while barely showing the creature, and threads in ideas about prejudice and fear of the unknown. Once the action moves into the forest, long chases and repeated confrontations dilute the tension, and abrupt swings between horror and comedy jar. At well over two and a half hours, it tests your patience, and the ending feels more like a sequel set-up than a resolution.
Technical aspects
Hong Kyung-pyo’s kinetic cinematography, Michael Abels’ score, the creature design and the practical effects are all first-rate, though some digital work shows its rough edges.
