‘Sapthasagaralu Sapthagirulu’, starring Nivin Pauly, Soori and Anjali, released in Telugu on October 9. It is the Telugu dubbed version of director Ram’s Tamil film ‘Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai’, produced by Suresh Kamatchi with music by Yuvan Shankar Raja.

The setup

A man who has been alive for eight thousand years (Nivin Pauly) and a young man just back from Dubai (Soori) end up in the same train compartment. In that isolated coach the immortal puts him through a torrid time. Who he really is, how he came to be immortal, and where the journey takes the two of them make up the story.

Performances

Nivin Pauly throws himself into the part of the unhinged immortal and earns most of the praise. Soori is natural and brings a few laughs, and Anjali does justice to her role. The emotional bond between the leads, though, never really takes hold.

Direction and screenplay

The opening stretch is intriguing, and the idea Ram has chosen is fresh and unusual. But the first half plays out in an unconventional style at an uneven pace, and the second half is stretched to the point of being hard to sit through. The attempt to fold so many ideas into one story doesn’t come together, and the ending fails to satisfy.

Technical aspects

N. K. Ekambaram’s cinematography handles the cramped train-compartment scenes skilfully. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music is just adequate. The heavy use of AI-generated visuals is distracting, and the editing is weak, with many scenes running on unnecessarily.
