Cine Sarkar Editorial Desk | Our perspective is informed by publicly available reviews, audience reactions, and information surrounding the film.
‘Thella Kaagitham’, which reached theatres on October 2, marks the directorial debut of Ramesh Bandreddi and the screen debut of Nakshatra, opposite Harsh Roshan. It begins as an innocent teenage romance and turns into a cautionary drama about what happens when young people face a crisis alone.
The setup
Bhimavaram, 2006. Ramu (Harsh Roshan) and Aasha (Nakshatra) are schoolmates whose feelings grow from tenth grade into their intermediate years. Then a mistake, made worse by some bad advice, pushes them into a crisis they’re far from ready for. How they handle it is the rest of the film.
Performances
Harsh Roshan is entirely convincing as an innocent, confused small-town teenager, and Nakshatra shows real confidence for a debutant. The pair share an easy, natural chemistry. Ajay leaves a mark in the climax, and Deepak Mali brings some welcome comic relief.
Direction and screenplay
The first half moves pleasantly on school-day humour and the leads’ innocence. Once the central conflict arrives, though, the writing loses conviction. A subject with plenty of dramatic potential is handled without enough emotional weight, and the second half drifts and repeats itself.
Technical aspects
Vijay Bulganin’s songs, especially “Chilaka”, are a highlight, and K.V. Guhan’s photography captures the small-town setting warmly. Tighter editing would have helped considerably.
What works
- Natural lead performances
- A breezy first half
- Pleasant music and warm visuals
- A relevant message, delivered with force in the climax
What doesn’t
- A slow, repetitive second half
- A central conflict without the emotional pull it needs
- Dated school humour
- Predictable storytelling
Cine Sarkar’s take
The film has something worth saying: teenagers in trouble should turn to their parents, not to outsiders. The cast and music serve that idea well, but the screenplay doesn’t do it justice. Weighing those strengths against those weaknesses, the Cine Sarkar Editorial Desk rates it 2.5/5. Because of its mature subject matter, it isn’t one for young children.
Cine Sarkar verdict: Earnest leads and a timely message, but the writing leaves this blank page only half filled.
Rating: 2.5/5
