‘418’, a horror thriller led by Chaithra J Achar, released in theatres on October 23. It marks the debut of director Kirtan Nadagouda and is produced by Naveen Yerneni and Ravi Shankar, with Prashanth Neel backing the project. Venky GG composed the music.

The setup

A former mental asylum has been turned into a college boys’ hostel, and its residents believe Room No. 418 is haunted. Vivek (Surya Raj), who moves into Room 417, has a strange experience. His friend Rohith (Charan Lakkaraju) doesn’t buy it, but Vivek starts digging, and what he uncovers drives the story.

Performances

Chaithra J Achar is the film’s anchor, building dread through silent reactions alone, and her character’s emotional backstory gives the film weight. Surya Raj, Charan Lakkaraju, Preethi Pagadala and Ramesh Indira are solid in support.

Direction and screenplay

Instead of leaning on jump scares, the director builds fear through the setting, lighting and sound, and a few twists land neatly. But the first half is sluggish, the story is routine, and the climax lacks proper closure. The social-media hype calling it terrifying doesn’t help either; it sets up expectations the film never meets.

Technical aspects

The sound design and background score are the standouts, especially an effective anklet motif. The cinematography is good and the editing serviceable. A song about the leads’ bond falls flat.
