‘The Paradise’ reunites Natural Star Nani with director Srikanth Odela and producer Sudhakar Cherukuri, the team behind ‘Dasara’. Released on September 24 in several languages, the period action drama sets out to tell a large-scale story of caste oppression and resistance.

The setup

Secunderabad, the 1980s. Jadal (Nani), from a marginalised tribe, watches his community suffer under a tyrannical landlord, and is drawn into leading its fight for dignity and citizenship rights. That struggle drives the rest of the film.

Performances

Nani transforms himself physically and emotionally for Jadal, and his ferocity in the action and mass sequences is the film’s backbone. Sonali Kulkarni, as Jadal’s mother, provides the emotional anchor. Mohan Babu brings real presence as Shikanja Malik, though the character is thinly written. Kayadu Lohar is a pleasant surprise, while Raghav Juyal’s turn veers into caricature.

Direction and screenplay

Srikanth Odela tries to address caste, oppression, revenge and resistance all at once, and the screenplay buckles under the weight. The editing rarely lets scenes breathe, many characters remain underdeveloped, and the emotional connection that usually powers a Nani film never fully forms.

Technical aspects

Anirudh Ravichander’s songs and score lift the film considerably, and the production design builds a harsh, lived-in world. The violence, however, is so relentless that it dulls its own impact. The film is certified A.
